Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goal - Henry Ford
The trend of Indians studying abroad is not new to the country. It dates back to pre-Independence years. The affluent used to send their wards to foreign countries for higher education and yet some pursued the study availing the scholarships. But today the trend has caught up with the youth more than ever before.
The option seems to be too alluring. It has no longer remained the proverbial sour grapes. While the affluent class and the nouveau riche afford the foreign education of their wards, the financially disadvantaged fund their education by making use of the easily available education loans and working part-time.
A foreign degree, a proud feather in one’s cap, brings in better recognition in professional and social circles. Besides, studying abroad has been a fascinating and challenging experience.
For entry into academic programmes abroad the candidates are required to take a few tests depending upon the level and course of study they choose. Following are some of the exams.
TOEFL
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), is a common standard test administered by the USA-based Educational Testing Services (ETS) across the world. It is a prerequisite to pursue studies in the US. The test measures the aptitude of the non-native speakers of English to analyse and comprehend the language as it is spoken, written and heard in the institutes of America.
Besides, TOEFL is required for almost all programmes in the US. Many government organisations, business and scholarship programmes use TOEFL score to assess the English language proficiency of the candidate whose native language is not English. Some of the institutes located outside the United States also use TOEFL score for the same purpose. Universities in Canada, Australia, Europe and New Zealand too recognize the TOEFL score along with the Test of Written English (TWE) in place of the usual IELTS.
The TOEFL is administered as TOEFL – iBT (TOEFL – Internet Based Test) and TOEFL –PBT (TOEFL – Paper Based Test). In areas where TOEFL- iBT is not available, the paper-based version TOEFL - PBT is offered. Though the ETS suggests that 11th grade level or above is suitable qualification to take the test, the level of the test is high. The test consists of the below mentioned four sections.
• Section I: Listening Comprehension
• Section II: Structure and Written Expression
• Section III: Reading Comprehension and Vocabulary
• Section IV: Essay Writing
About a million candidates appear for TOEFL annually at 4,500 test centers spread across 165 countries. The test which has 30-40 dates a year is usually conducted on Saturdays and Sundays. There are 73 test centres in India. The scores are valid for two years from the date of the test.

GRE
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a commercially-run standardized test conducted by the Educational Testing Services, USA. In the admission process the level of emphasis upon the GRE scores varies widely between schools and again departments within the school. Sometimes the score can be crucial for admission or sometimes it is regarded as just an admission formality. Though GRE is looked upon as the first major hurdle to be cleared to get admission in the Graduate School of choice, a high score alone does guarantee admission. The GRE score is one of the several parameters the Graduate Schools or Universities look into to assess an applicant for admission to all the streams except Management.
The GRE is taken as GRE General and GRE Subject Tests. A candidate may take either GRE General Test or GRE Subject Test or both depending upon the courses and the Institute or University requirements.
